ABOUT THE POSITION

JOB SUMMARY:

Performs a variety of skilled work in the maintenance and repair of wastewater facility mechanical, pumping, and process systems, and related equipment at both centralized and remote treatment facilities and pumping stations. Assists and/or provides lead direction to subordinates with maintenance repair and routine preventative maintenance of plant equipment.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

This is the journey-level position in the skilled Water Reclamation District (WRD) Mechanical Technician series. While leading a group or individuals, the incumbent has the responsibility for directing and performing the more complex and difficult maintenance, repair and related service activities for the wastewater treatment facility.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

The WRD Mechanical Technician III normally reports to the WRD Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor and provides direction to subordinates, as assigned. The incumbent is responsible for leading skilled and semi-skilled staff in performing a variety of skilled work in maintenance, repair, and related repair activities.

This examination will establish an Open Competitive and Promotional list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months or may be extended as needed by the Office of Human Resources. Human Resources reserves the right to call only the most qualified applicants to the hiring interview.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent AND three (3) years of full-time skilled experience performing mechanical equipment maintenance and repair in an industrial/plant setting. Equivalent combinations of education/experience may be considered.

Working Conditions: Work extended shifts or be called back in emergency situations. Work with exposure to hazardous chemicals and substances found in the wastewater treatment process. Work out of doors in all weather conditions. Performs standby duties as required.

Licensing and Certification: Must possess a valid Class C Nevada Driver's License at time of appointment. Must possess a valid Nevada Water Environment Association (NWEA) Plant Maintenance Technologist Grade III Certification, or candidate must possess a valid Plant Maintenance Technologist Grade III Certificate, or equivalent, within another state. If a non-NWEA certification is held the candidate, within one year of hire, must obtain, either through reciprocity or test, a NWEA Plant Maintenance Technologist Grade III Certificate.

Some positions may require a crane operator's certification through the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operator's (NCCCO) within twenty-four (24) months from the date of hire. Some positions may require confined space entry certification.

Background Investigation: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. Periodically after employment, background investigations may be conducted.

Medical Examination: Employment is contingent upon the results of a physical examination performed by our examining physician.

Pre-Employment Drug Testing: Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug examination.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Provides lead direction, training and work review to a work crew; organizes and assigns work, sets priorities, and follows-up to ensure coordination and completion of assigned work; participates in selection of staff; trains staff in work procedures; contributes information to supervisor regarding performance of subordinate staff; participates in the design, layout, installation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of pumps, valves, motors, pressure regulators, chemical dosing systems, compressed air production and delivery systems, blowers, storage and transfer tanks, piping, heat exchangers, boilers, generators, pumps, motors and other mechanical, hydraulic, and electromechanical equipment utilized in wastewater treatment and processing on a regular basis; prepares working drawings and sketches; assists in preparing projects specifications; estimates materials, parts, tools and equipment needed for work assignments; orders and picks up materials and supplies from outside vendors as appropriate; prepares cost estimates and purchase requests for jobs; may review work performed by vendors for conformance to instructions; utilizes computerized maintenance management systems to process work orders, update equipment information, facilitate preventative maintenance programs, and produce purchasing requests; performs skilled work in the installation, maintenance and repair of plant and lift station mechanical systems; performs semi skilled work on electrical equipment and interrelated control systems associated with plant and lift stations; observes safety precautions and procedures, and uses appropriate Personal Protective Equipment while performing duties; inspects plant equipment chemical feeders, valves, piping systems and pumps for proper operation; performs preventative maintenance following an established schedule and repairs as required; ensures that all installation, maintenance and repair work is performed to code; tests and troubleshoots plant mechanical and electrical system malfunctions, repairs or orders and replaces components, and tests equipment prior to placing back into service; reads diagrams, blueprints, specifications and manuals for installation and repair projects; maintains and services hand and power tools related to the trade; contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's services to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team; maintains records of work performed and materials used; drives District vehicles to plant work sites and transports materials and assists as required; may work from lift trucks and other aerial devices. Performs additional duties as necessary.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Mobility to work in a typical industrial or related maintenance setting, including operating typical trade equipment, hand and power tools and standard office equipment, and to drive a motor vehicle to various work sites; stamina to stand, walk and climb and to work in confined or awkward spaces for extended periods of time; strength to lift and maneuver materials and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds with proper equipment; vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over a radio or telephone.
